In the world of Bōkoku, everything has a spirit: from the grandest mountain to the lowliest rock, from the great ocean to a babbling brook, from the sun and moon to a samurai’s ancestral sword. All of these spirits are alive and sentient, although some spirits are more aware, alert, and intelligent than others. Some are also more powerful than others; some might even be called gods. But all are worthy of respect and even veneration.
You do not need to select a patron deity for your character. However, you may wish to put some thought into which spirits he commonly venerates. Some of the spirits commonly venerated include spirits of good luck, wealth, love, strength, wisdom, longevity, storms, harvests, the sea, the winds, war, and various crafts and professions. The sun and moon, as well as other celestial bodies, are commonly venerated as well.
There is also a philosophical system that overlays the religion of the spirits: called the Sublime Way or the Way of Enlightenment, it emphasizes the individual’s quest for enlightenment over veneration of the spirits, though the two are never seen as mutually exclusive. By focusing the mind on the eternal, unchanging Void rather than the temporal, material world, a follower of the Way hopes to free his soul from the material and achieve enlightenment. It is not uncommon for a follower of the Way to venerate previous enlightened souls alongside or even in place of his actual ancestors.
